Adoption Requirements

• Ready to adopt immediately (animals cannot be 'held')
• Residence in stable, permanent housing in the greater Chicagoland area (certain exceptions available for families farther away)
• 21 years old with a verifiable ID, street address, phone number and email address
• Renters must show lease or permit allowing pets
• All adults have consented to adoption & pet care
• All children are mature enough to behave appropriately with new pet(s)
• All family members must be present at the meet & greet
  
• Financial ability to care for the pet, including vacation care, quality food, routine medical care and unforeseen emergencies
• Willingness and financial ability to provide adequate exercise and training for dogs 
• ​Environment with love and attention; pets not to be left alone without a companion for an extended period
  
• Adopting the pet as a permanent family member, making accommodations as lifestyles may change
  
• Complete application, provide personal and vet (if applicable) references, complete interview, attend a meet & greet
  
• ​Allow up to 5 days for processing of application
• Pay adoption fee and sign legally-binding adoption contract 
  

Adoption Fees
​​The adoption fee is used to further our rescue efforts and to help defray the costs of services performed for your future pet by Adopt-A-Pet, including:

• Vet exams
  
• Flea/tick treatments
• Dewormings
• Heartworm test and heartworm preventatives for dogs
• Feline Leukemia and FIV test for cats
• All age-appropriate vaccinations
• Microchipping
• Spaying/neutering
• Diagnosis and treatment of any existing medical conditions

How To Adopt

​Browse our posted animals. If you see an animal that interests you and you want more information, send an inquiry with your questions.  If you see an animal that you want to apply for, complete an application (see below). 

If you want to meet an animal, you will need to complete an application and interview first.

Please allow 48 hours for our volunteers to respond to inquiries and application submissions.    

Once your application has been processed and preliminarily accepted, a Meet & Greet will be set up with an adoption counselor to determine if you and the pet are a match.  Final adoption approval rests with the adoption counselor.  If the adoption is approved, a second meeting may be set to complete paperwork and take your new pet home.
